The following supplements can be used to compensate for any vitamin or mineral deficiencies that you may have. It is not uncommon for individuals that suffer from high stress and adrenal fatigue to be deficient in a number of vitamins and minerals. You may discuss with your doctor or health care professional if extra supplementation is beneficial for you.
B vitamins are important for your nervous system, they are involved in many bodily processes and are critical for energy production and utilization. There are 3 key B vitamins: B3, B5 and B6. You may buy these individually or as part of a Vitamin B complex supplement that combines the various B vitamins.
There are a lot of vitamins and minerals needed for the adrenal glands to function properly, but vitamin C is probably the most important one. Vitamin C is directly involved in producing cortisol in the adrenal glands and protects the adrenal glands from oxidative damage that occurs during stress. Buffered Vitamin C is a well tolerated form and gives you great absorption.
Foods are a very modest source of vitamin D. Fortunately there are two other ways to get your vitamin D. The first one is by exposing your skin to sunlight. But for several reasons most of us don’t get enough exposure to sunlight to make vitamin D (we live mostly indoors nowadays, use of sunscreen, seasonal lack of sunlight etc).
Fermented cod liver oil is a great supplement that provides vitamin D. This used to be a standard supplement in traditional European societies, helping to provide fat-soluble vitamins A and D, as well as omega 3 fatty acids in a highly digestible format. According to the research of Dr. Weston Price, the combination of cod liver oil and butter oil even produced better results.
Vitamin E is another key vitamin for optimal adrenal health. Make sure to use a “mixed tocopherol” type of vitamin E supplement.
Magnesium supplements come in many varieties. Not all forms of magnesium are absorbed equally well and some may cause more side effects than others. Magnesium Glycinate seems to be the best tolerated form of Magnesium for the most people. Here is a high quality magnesium supplement:
Ashwagandha (also known as Indian Ginseng) is especially useful for stress-induced sleeping problems and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for stress relief. It has also been linked to pain relief, antioxidant effects, reducing inflammation, stimulating thyroid function as well as respiratory and immune function.
Licorice root is considered a staple of traditional medicine for adrenal insufficiency and is used in many Chinese patent herbal formulas. Please be aware that it raises blood pressure. You can use it as a liquid extract, in capsules or in tea:

Rhodiola has been used successfully to increase stamina, prevent fatigue, improve mental function, reduce anxiety and ameliorate symptoms of mild depression. There is also evidence that it acts as an antioxidant, enhances immune system function and can increase sexual energy. You can find Rhodiola in tincture or capsule form.
Ginseng is traditionally used in herbal medicine to remedy physical or mental exhaustion, lowered immunity and to facilitate adaptation to stress. It is considered a great herb for reinforcing vital energy and longevity.
Studies confirm that melatonin not only helps people fall asleep, but also enhances the quality of sleep.
Poor adrenal function is often related to poor digestion and low gastric acidity. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is naturally secreted in the stomach to digest food in order to be absorbed in the bloodstream, but chronic stress can deplete HCL and the body’s ability to produce HCL begins to decline after the age of 50. Low hydrochloric acid can cause nutrient deficiencies, as the body’s ability to absorb vitamins, amino acids, and minerals becomes severely impaired. Therefore it is a great idea to use digestive enzymes that contain hydrochloric acid (usually found as Betaine Hydrochloride).
Poor digestion may also cause food to become stagnant, ferment and even putrefy in the gut, which may result in bacteria and yeast overgrowth that will cause inflammation in the gut lining. Supplementation with a good probiotic (probiotics are “good” live bacteria and yeast) can aid in digestive health as they play a key role in regulating healthy intestinal function and digestion by balancing intestinal microflora.
There are several adrenal glandular extracts on the market. Some of these only contain the extracts, while others combine them with adrenal supporting herbs.
