How To Say “Adrenal Fatigue” In 23 Foreign Languages

 

It was Dr. James Wilson who coined the term “Adrenal Fatigue” in 1998, but Adrenal Fatigue has been (and often still is) referred to by many other names such as Non-Addison’s hypoadrenia,  sub-clinical hypoadrenia, Neurasthenia, General adaptation syndrome, Adrenal neurasthenia, Adrenal apathy, Adrenaline fatigue, HPA axis dysfunction, Adrenal burnout, Adrenal exhaustion, functional hypoadrenia and functional Adrenal stress. These are all used as synonyms for Adrenal Fatigue in the English language and I was curious to see whether Adrenal Fatigue has direct equivalents in other languages.

Adrenal Fatigue, Neurasthenia, General Adaptation Syndrome or HPA axis dysfunction?

 

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to whether Adrenal Fatigue is actually the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) or not – or what the relationship is between the two of them. To make matters even more complicated some doctors and healthcare professionals refer to Adrenal Fatigue’s 3 Stages, 4 Stages, 5 Stages or even 7 Stages. So what is the relationship between Adrenal Fatigue and GAS and how many stages does Adrenal Fatigue have? In this first post I will give you my two cents on both matters and hope to clear things up for you. You will come to see that Adrenal Fatigue is actually a misnomer and a more accurate term would be HPA axis dysfunction.
